Singing Week Tarragona 2017
July 2017, 14th to 21st
Welcome to Tarragona Singing Week,
a musical meeting to share,
learn and enjoy choral music.
Tarragona Singing Week is organised every three years with the collaboration of a team of people from the Choir Ciutat de Tarragona Association who, jointly with the city Council’s Department of Culture, make this event possible.
who is who
Since summer 1997, the city of Tarragona has been holding a Singing Week every three years. Thanks to the experience gained and with renewed enthusiasm, people from the Choir Ciutat de Tarragona Association bring together singers from the city, the country and around the world. In 2012 Tarragona Singing Week entered the framework of festivals organized by the Catalan Federation of Choral Associations (FCEC) and the European Choral Association – Europa Cantat. In 2005, 2008, 2011 and 2014 events, the Singing Week was established in the international calendar and well-rooted in the city of Tarragona. In 2017 we will celebrate the 8th Singing Week and the twentieth anniversary of the first Singing Week (1997).
On this occasion, and following the previous models, the participating singers (mainly from Catalan, European and American choirs) will offer their own concerts in the most beautiful venues of the old city of Tarragona. Moreover, the singers will participate in four workshops of their choice, conducted by well-known maestros of international prestige: Brady Allred (the USA), Michael Gohl (Switzerland), Bernie Sherlock (Ireland) and Josep Vila (Catalonia); the participating choirs will offer their contributions in a concert before the end of the week.
On the last night, all the singers, joining the Tarragona Instrumental Ensemble and some children’s choirs from the region of Tarragona will perform in concert two works commissioned by the Festival. The Mediterranean Suite, a selection of songs arranged for children’s choir and instrumental ensemble by Eduard Iniesta, on the occasion of the 2018 Mediterranean Games which will be held some weeks before our Singing Week. Closing the concert, all participating singers of the Singing Week will perform the work Te Deum by the prestigious composer Albert Guinovart. This work, originally for equal voices, was commissioned by the Choir Vivaldi and its conductor Òscar Boada and premiered a few months ago at the Palau de la Música Catalana. This new version of the Te Deum is for mixed choir, soloists, wind instruments ensemble, percussion and piano ( which will be played by the composer himself), and will be conducted by Xavier Puig.
We are sure that the closing concert at the Camp de Mart, the auditorium at the foot of the ancient Roman Wall, will provide the highlight of the week.
